Yay, Ferret snipes me on talking about MAD. Fine, be that way. :(

Disarming all nukes is a completely futile attempt. One, no country that isn't suicidal would agree to it because it threatens their safety. Look at the middle east. The one thing stopping the Arab nations from kicking the (Want to be allies? Sometimes I like to pretend I am a princess riding a pony..) out of Israel is MAD. They're scared of getting nuked, and so this threat is a method, the only method of keeping a relative amount of peace in the area.

I was about to type two but then I saw ponk's post. If possible? Yeah sure. And then I'd achieve singularity 30 years before the earliest estimate. Yes, nukes should be disarmed. Yes, countries should be forbidden to do further research on WMDs. But would I try to implement this in any way in today's society? Nah, I'm not suicidal yet.

Ponk, I don't know about what news report you're talking about, but I'd be grateful if you let me take a look at it. The only possible thing is that US/Russia disarms nukes to a cap of, say, 500 per country. Which is still a shedload.

Ferret, why hasn't war broken out on the korean penninsula yet? Nukes. All sides know that whoever makes the first shot will be eating nukes for breakfest--South Korea would be suicidal to attempt an invasion into Korea and vice versa. How is this different from the situation in 1950? The widespread usage of nukes. MAD is the thing keeping the entire island being blown apart.

I saw the report on Channel 16 WBOC-HD. Not sure if you get that in China.

After a while, nukes disarm themselves :D They become Duds and unsafe to use. But yeah, I am all for disarming ALL of the worlds nukes.

However, it isnt possible, with countries like China, North Korea etc., I mean think about India's geographic location. China on one side, they hate us. Pakistan on the other, they hate us too. And both are nuke capable. So as I see the current situation, I fully support India's nuclear weapons program. Infact I regularly follow and support India's militarization programmes, what equipment they acquire, or what they are developing etc., I am also for more defence spending.

So I guess you cant just disarm nukes. Though its a nice idea :)

Although due to the massive half life of elements involved, this would be hundreds if not thousands of years.

The main argument for the existence of nuclear weapons is as a deterrent, to prevent other countries firing them; many countries have a sufficient stock of such weapons to obliterate most major cities in pretty much any country in the world. The thing preventing this is the knowledge that missiles would be fired in retaliation, and eventually could render the earth's surface uninhabitable or worse.

If it were possible to disarm every single nuclear weapon, then this still would not work, as an alternative would eventually be developed.

Have to agree, nukes are just a deterrent. The real WMD are the AK 47s :)

Nukes nukes nukes.... Honestly I hate em. We have enough of them to blow up the world, and enough atomic bombs to blow up the world 7 times. Nukes make it so that you can't walk in the crash zone for 50 years, making it extremely dangerous. The world will probably go to war for world war three with in the next 300 years because of nukes.

True... People would switch to atomic. Atomic and nuclear are similar but not the same as many people think, nukes shock waves are larger, but the initial blast is not as destructive. My friend thinks NASA discovered aliens with higher technology, and wants to defend itself against them. Lol. But if you think about it, if we are attacked by aliens, nukes would be our best chance.
